The REDRESS YouTube channel is fully operational and contains the latest videos of the field work carried out in the different case studies of the project. The partners of WP2 (Innovative approaches for deep-sea restoration of vulnerable habitats) and WP3 (Innovative and cost-effective technologies for monitoring deep-sea restoration efforts) show the activities carried out during the restoration interventions from the inspection of the site where the restoration will be carried out to the deployment of the 3D eco-reefs and artificial structures and the monitoring of the interventions. The REDRESS gallery also includes three videos presenting different aspects of the project: 1) The extraordinary biodiversity of the deep sea, 2) The deep sea in danger and 3) Existing and new restoration technologies.
The first video shows the biodiversity of the deep sea. Attention is paid to the project’s target habitats such as cold-water corals (Lophelia /Desmophyllum) and coral gardens, bamboo corals on soft sediments (Funiculina) and cold seeps (Siboglinidae, Lamellibrachia), all of which can attract high biodiversity. The images were collected along the European seas between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The second video shows the anthropic impact and degradation of deep ecosystems due to various threats such as trawling, abandoned nets, mineral extraction, exploitation of hydrocarbons and oil, exploitation of genetic resources (bioprospecting), climate change with effects on oceanographic dynamics (stratification).
The last video is based on the experience acquired during the restoration interventions by the partners of the consortium in the first two years of the project. This video shows the efforts made along the EU seas highlighting different approaches and innovative solutions for restoration interventions and their monitoring. REDRESS wins the technological challenge of collecting high-definition images and using cost-effective solutions to make deep-sea restoration sustainable.
