Deep-sea restoration works best when we work together!
UAc/IMAR recently hosted a second REDRESS workshop at the DeepSeaLab, bringing together researchers and local fishers to support the restoration of vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems. During the workshop, the team shared valuable knowledge on protocols for keeping cold-water corals and other deep-sea benthic species caught as bycatch alive onboard fishing vessels and transferring them safely to aquaria facilities. The team also demonstrated how to prepare coral fragments for active transplantation to the restoration site, Condor seamount, using the “badminton method” and Bio-liberator device, while discussing the long-term benefits of coral garden restoration for local fisheries through the active participation of fishers in restoration efforts. Together, science and local community knowledge are pushing deep-sea ecosystem restoration forward in the Azores.
