The Aquarium of Genoa (https://www.acquariodigenova.it/) and the Polytechnic University of Marche launch a new scientific collaboration for the conservation of the deepest and most remote environments of the Mediterranean Sea. As part of the REDRESS project, a marine aquarium dedicated to the deep Mediterranean Sea was opened to the public on 16 December 2025. This exhibition aims to introduce the public to remote and unknown environments, rich in life and biodiversity, raising everyone’s awareness of their protection and restoration. The REDRESS aquarium is a great opportunity to maximize the impact of the project by showing the different solutions for restoration interventions by promoting natural recolonization using deep incubators capable of attracting larvae and transferring organisms to the areas where they have disappeared. The project also supports the regeneration of deep corals and so-called “animal forests”, using fragments and organisms accidentally captured by fishing nets, which are replanted on the seabed after being fixed on environmentally friendly substrates. This collaboration is fundamental to approaching the largest audience starting from the young generations. The REDRESS aquarium can inspire many students to protect and restore biodiversity, and safeguarding the health of deep-sea ecosystems will be one of the professions of the next generations. During the presentation of this new exhibition, Roberto Danovaro and Silvia Lavorano (Genoa Aquarium) responded to all questions and curiosity of the students of the primary and secondary school on the mystery of the deep-sea biodiversity. Among the Italian teams involved among the partners of the consortium, in addition to UNIVPM, CNR and SZN also participated. The REDRESS aquarium is also supported by the project video that has been prepared with the contribution of several partners of the consortium that filmed the field work carried out throughout the EU Seas.
